The Ram truck brand officially began in 2010. Before that, Ram was a name used to designate trucks with a Dodge nameplate.
The goal and purpose of making Ram a brand of its own was to take the design and production of trucks more seriously. By dedicating an entire brand to such an enterprise, the company could focus more in creating exactly what the real and genuine truck-owner wanted in a truck.
The first truck to emerge with the Dodge Ram badge came out in 1981. There was the 150, a half-ton truck; the 250, a three-quarter ton truck; and the 350, a one-ton truck. The squared-off body lines of the truck made it quite distinct in terms of exterior design aesthetic. In fact, it is a design that has developed quite a reputation for hot rodders over the years.
The truck was extremely robust for its time, with available four-wheel drive. It originally featured a Slant-6 but that was replaced by a fuel-injected V6. For over ten years, this first generation Dodge Ram fared extremely well in a competitive truck market.
The second-generation Dodge Ram debuted in 1994. That same year, it was named as the Motor Trend Truck of the Year. The Ram would go on to get very comfortable with receiving that particular acclaim: Motor Trend would go on to name the Dodge Ram as Truck of the Year in 2003, 2010, 2013 and 2014.
Since 2010, Ram has been on its own and doing very well. The full-size 1500 and 2500 trucks are fantastic versatile trucks. The 3500, 4500 and 5500 represent some of the strongest and toughest heavy duty trucks on the market.
